In a major boost to its environmental sustainability agenda, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has commissioned two state-of-the-art mist blower fogging units at the Port of Mombasa to tackle harmful dust emissions generated during bulk cargo handling.
The initiative is a key component of KPA’s ongoing Green Port Policy, which seeks to minimize the environmental footprint of port operations while protecting the health and safety of port workers, users, and surrounding communities. The newly installed mist blowers—stationed at Berths 9 and 10—are designed to suppress airborne dust from materials such as clinker, coal, and gypsum, which pose significant health and environmental risks if not properly managed.
The mist blowers complement existing eco-hopper systems already in use at the port and are expected to significantly reduce the dispersal of fine particles during cargo discharge. The units work by releasing a fine mist that binds with dust particles, causing them to settle quickly instead of remaining airborne.
This pilot project underscores KPA’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and operational excellence in line with global port sustainability standards. The Authority will closely monitor the performance of the new system and use the data to inform potential expansion of the technology across other berths.
The installation comes amid heightened focus on greening Africa’s ports, with institutions like TradeMark Africa (TMA) partnering with key stakeholders to support low-carbon, climate-resilient trade infrastructure.
