The importance of having a harmonized strategy by the East Africa Community (EAC) to tackle Covid-19 as has been canvassed by various stakeholders continue to emerge.
Uganda is pushing strict measures in allowing entry of the trucks through its various border points. The country has been on a lockdown and has carried out the highest number of tests in the region according to the latest statistics given by worldometer, which gives live updates of the global trends of Covid-19.
The country has so far carried out 44,110 tests and confirmed only 98 cases compared to Kenya’s 25,861 tests with 535 cases. New infections in Uganda, which effected a lockdown that is now being eased, have stagnated while Kenya recorded the highest number of new infections since it reported its first case yesterday, in what the government said came from community infections.
What this means is that the country cannot project with accuracy the state of the country’s infections, according to health experts in the Ministry of Health. This high numbers, recorded in the past 3 days came from mass testing the country is currently undertaking.
But based on population volumes, Rwanda leads the pack with 2,779 tests per 1 million population. Kenya and Uganda compares poorly with 481 and 964 respectively.
Other countries in the region that have not done enough tests include Tanzania, which has not recorded a single test, according to worldometer and South Sudan with a total of 1247 tests. Burundi has the lowest infection rate at 15. Rwanda has 261 total infections, Uganda 98, South Sudan 52 and Tanzania 480.
Covid-19 has also started taking toll on Mombasa port, which is experiencing congestion due to slow evacuation of the cargo due to delays in clearing as a result of lean staff at the facility.
