The Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA) has elected Mr. John Msafari as the new Chair of the Board. Ms. Elizabeth Kimkung will serve as the Vice-Chair. The elections took place on September 4, 2024, during the Board’s first meeting following the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on July 3rd, 2024. Mr. Msafari, the former Vice Chairman, replaces Mr. Rashid Mohamed, whose two-year term has ended.
Mr. Rashid Mohammed will be remembered for cementing SCEA’s position as the lead voice of cargo owners on matters of transport and logistics and enhancing members’ participation in SCEA activities, as evidenced by their robust participation in various SCEA Committees.
Mr. Msafari, currently the Group Administrative Director at Alpha Group, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and an alumnus of the Centre for Corporate Governance and boasts a wealth of experience, having served as Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Advisor of the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), and has served on several boards, including the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), and the Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation, among others.
He brings a wealth of knowledge in the maritime industry and a vision for advancing the Council’s mission and vision. His leadership is expected to drive significant progress in the industry and foster greater collaboration, sustainability, and growth of the Council.
Ms. Kimkung, the current General Manager of Freight Forwarder Kenya Limited, is a lawyer, a holder of a Master of Business Administration (USIU), a Bachelor of Arts in International Business Administration (University of Exeter, UK), and is a director of several boards. She is known for her strategic insights and commitment to the sector.
“Her appointment reflects the Board’s confidence in her ability to support Mr. Msafari and contribute to the Council’s goals through her expertise and dedication. Before this, she served as the Chairperson of the Budgets and Regulatory Committee of the Council,” Mr. Agayo Ogambi, the acting Chief Executive Officer at SCEA, said.
Added he; “The election of these two distinguished professionals underscores the SCEA’s commitment to strong governance and effective leadership. Mr. Msafari and Ms. Kimkung will play pivotal roles in shaping the future of the Council in advocacy for an efficient, predictable, and competitive logistics sector.”
The SCEA is a business membership association representing cargo owners in Eastern Africa. SCEA uniquely focuses its advocacy initiatives on all modes of freight transportation and trade facilitation-related issues. It aims to advocate regulatory and policy changes that will transform East Africa into a region of high logistics efficiency and competitive pricing for logistics services.
