Madaraka Express takes stringent measures to contain Covid-19

As Kenya confirms its third case of Covid-19 infection yesterday, the Kenya Railways has introduced new measures that will require passengers to have their temperatures checked before they use Madaraka Express stations.

This measure will to go on unit the Coronavirus outbreak is contained and overcome, KR announced through its twitter account. Kenya Railways has been providing soap, water and sanitizers in all the stations and inside the trains as per the government directive of 13th March.

“In view of this we advise passengers to arrive to the stations early enough to comply with the necessary sanitary procedures,” KR said.

This comes at a time that logistics industry has started to experience vagaries of Covid-19 infection, which broke out in China and has since affected over 110 countries.

The port is already reeling from the worst ever performance at the port of Mombasa to date, with the lowest arrivals of ships and cancellation as countries around the world tighten travel to contain the pandemic.

Kenya is feeling the economic effects of the coronavirus as imports from China fall because of travel bans for people and goods. So far, the port has received cancellation notice of 37 ships that were scheduled to call this month, while the fate of 104 others remains uncertain.

Airlines are incurring losses, and small traders in Kenya said they fear their stocks will soon run out, putting them out of business.

There is little activity these days at a container terminal in the Kenyan port of Mombasa.

The coronavirus outbreak has brought shipments from China to a halt. Kenya’s small traders depend on manufactured goods from China that are normally unloaded at this port.

As Kenya reels with the outbreak, the country’s traders can only hope that the virus is contained soon so that imports from China can resume and they can get back to business as usual.
