Container Freight Stations (CFSs) have been critical in complementing port operations by decongesting facilities and ensuring smooth cargo flow in and out of Kenya’s key trade hubs. Two standout facilities, Makupa Transit Shade Ltd. (MTS) and Boss Freight Terminal Ltd. (BFTL), have cemented their reputations as premier logistics providers in the coastal city of Mombasa, serving both the local and international clients.

Background of the Companies

Makupa Transit Shade Ltd. (MTS) was founded in 2007 to address congestion at the Port of Mombasa, offering expansive cargo storage space and efficient handling of various cargo types. Storage capacity of over 4,000 TEUs with an anchorage. With advanced technology such as the CFS Pro operations system, MTS specializes in full container loads (FCL), less than container loads (LCL), Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo), project cargo, and transshipment services. The facility is also equipped with a dedicated four-lane access road to streamline movement.

Boss Freight Terminal Ltd. (BFT), established a year earlier in 2006, occupies 8 acres near Mbaraki Wharf and has grown into a vital player in the logistics sector. BFTL boasts a storage capacity of over 3,000 vehicle units and 2,500 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), excelling in general cargo handling, RoRo services, container stripping, break-bulk services, and cargo consolidation. Its commitment to flexibility and security has made it a preferred partner for local and international businesses.

Services Provided

Both companies provide specialized logistics services that cater to diverse client needs.

MTS focuses on import/export container handling, warehousing, cargo consolidation, and transshipment. RoRo vehicle handling and reefer container services.

BFTL offers general cargo handling, container stripping, RoRo vehicle handling, and reefer container services.

Innovations for Competitiveness

To remain competitive, both companies have implemented state-of-the-art cargo tracking systems and digital inventory management, ensuring real-time updates and streamlined operations.

Job Creation

The two facilities have also made notable contributions to employment. Total staff over

200 employees for both MTS and BFT supporting livelihoods and the local economy.

Adapting to Challenges

The operationalization of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) initially presented challenges as cargo volumes shifted. However, MTS and BFTL successfully adapted by diversifying their services, focusing on niche markets like high-value cargo, and enhancing operational efficiencies to maintain their market relevance.

Advantages of CFSs Over SGR

CFSs offer several advantages over the SGR, including flexibility in handling diverse cargo types, bonded warehousing providing storage options for clients, and personalized customer service with real-time updates. Other advantages include cost-effectiveness for certain types of cargo compared to SGR rates and infrastructure enhancements to bolster efficiency. MTS has constructed additional warehouses, while BFTL has invested in RoRo segregation to handle specialized cargo types better.

Recognition and Accreditation

Both companies have achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management systems, underscoring their commitment to excellence. BFTL also won the Best Logistics and Transport Company 2024 award, highlighting its industry leadership.

In the short term, both companies aim to enhance operational efficiency, expand their market share, and improve customer satisfaction. Long-term goals include infrastructure expansion, regional presence growth, and strategic partnerships for end-to-end logistics solutions.
