The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is increasing investments in automation and equipment acquisition to enhance efficiency at the Port of Mombasa. As part of its modernization efforts, the KPA is upgrading terminal operating and SAP systems to streamline cargo handling, minimize system downtimes, and expedite document processing.
During a recent stakeholder engagement session with the Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA) and the Kenya Association of International Cargo Consolidators yesterday, KPA reiterated its commitment to addressing challenges and leveraging opportunities to enhance operational efficiency. A key component of this transformation is the acquisition of additional cargo handling equipment.
“This year, the Port of Mombasa will receive ten new Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes and twenty terminal tractors, significantly boosting cargo-handling capacity and reducing turnaround times,” KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto said
KPA is also prioritizing the automation of waiver applications and processing, a move aimed at increasing transparency and expediting approvals.
“These measures align with the authority’s broader objective of optimizing port operations to accommodate growing cargo volumes and improve trade facilitation,” Captain Ruto added.
This reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure synchronized and seamless service delivery. Ruto also emphasized that “port operations are running smoothly, with no congestion issues currently reported at the Port of Mombasa.”
With these strategic investments, “KPA is positioning itself to meet the evolving demands of global trade while ensuring efficiency, cost effectiveness, and stakeholder satisfaction.”
